Heart arrhythmias (heart rhythm disorders) are the most common cause of death in Western countries and most developing countries, including our beloved country of Iran. Although most people who suffer cardiac arrest have a known history of heart disease, many apparently healthy individuals, including athletes, fall victim to sudden cardiac arrest each year. In addition, cardiac arrest is the most common cause of death in heart patients, including those with a history of heart attacks or heart failure. There is another group of patients who suffer from frequent episodes of palpitations or fainting and loss of consciousness. Many of these patients are forced to make repeated visits to the emergency room or take potent heart and non-heart medications without being aware of the modern techniques and technologies available for the definitive treatment of these arrhythmias. Cardiac arrhythmias are a major burden on patients’ quality of life and the country’s healthcare system, while being among the most treatable and preventable diseases in the field of medicine, even in non-cardiac specialties. In 2000, the first arrhythmia center in Iran was established with the creation of an electrophysiology department and an arrhythmia clinic at Rajaei Heart Hospital. In 2002, the Tehran Arrhythmia Center was founded as the first specialized private center for the diagnosis and treatment of arrhythmias in Iran, and it continues to operate under the supervision of Dr. Saeed Oraii. The efforts of this center in providing scientific and educational content, as well as successfully treating tens of thousands of patients over the years, have significantly increased awareness about this group of diseases among the medical community and the general public. This has also motivated distinguished physicians to become interested in educating and engaging in scientific activities in this field. Fortunately, there are now several centers across the country staffed by expert physicians dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of these conditions.
